The Garden City University College was established as College of Information Technology and Management Systems (CITMAS) in 2001 and was after due accreditation, granted permission to operate the university College in January 2004.

 

A vast area was acquired at Kenyase, near Kumasi , to construct an ultra-modern lecture room campus and offices which were constructed with facilities to meet every identified need. Among these facilities are internet connectivity with wi-fi accessibility,a fully equipped library, office equipment, and a fully dedicated satellite system.

The College commenced in October 2002 with four main courses:

  1. Certificate in Auto Cad
  2. Certificate in Integrated Business Computer Applicationss
  3. Diploma in Computer Programming and Operations
  4. Diploma in Network Information Systems

In January 2004, the Board of Directors voted to convert the College into a University College . This was done to broaden the scope of the college and utilize the vast resources that had been assembled.

Students•To produce innovative,well grounded and well rounded business executives,entrepreneurs,analysts and researchers who can meet challenges of our time in an increasingly sophisticated global village.

•To provide a conducive environment for research and development.

• To provide a high quality and stimulating environment to enable students to achieve their full potential.

The mission of the university is to effectively blend communication and information technology, business managerial education and rigorous education in arts and sciences as the engine of development and change in the Ghanaian society. That is, to:

•  use technology to enhance teaching and learning experience by integrating technology into all majors and programs and assist students to become leader in the use of technology in their fields.

•  attract and retain personnel who are proficient in supporting the use of technology to implement an integrated and comprehensive information/communication system to facilitate global partnerships.

•  act as lever for the propagation of new technologies so as to harness human resources for the most challenging tasks ahead and to be responsive to the new innovations in communication technology, management and international business, and to be in tune with the contemporary industrial culture and economic environments.

•  bring about quality improvement, modernization and capacity expansion in the requirements and expectations of the industry in the new globally competitive industrial and economic environments driven by the new technologies.

•  offer competitive edge information technology, business and entrepreneurship resources management and an all round competitive edge in business promotion, management and citizenry

•  offer a learning environment that emphasizes the practical knowledge and includes working through case studies and understanding projects for companies. Career development and job placement are top priorities of the university

•  to develop the next generation of innovators who will become agents for social change in the development process of our society. Graduating students will be prepared and encouraged to be project-oriented and self employed in small, medium scale business of their choice and thus play a vital role in the economic growth of the country.

In pursuance of the above, the university shall admit students of any race, color, gender, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students of the school. It shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs, nor in employment.

GCUC occupies a modern, attractive campus in the Kwabre-East district of the Ashanti Region. It has academic and administrative facilities with tremendous physical and electronic resources including:

  1. 15 "smart classrooms"
  2. An  Electronic & Multimedia Library
  3. State - of- the- art telecommunication and technology laboratories
  4. Two well equipped convertible rooms with seating capacity for 400 persons.

For training and holding of conferences, workshops etc for private and non –governmental organization.

  1. A modern cafeteria which serves a wide variety of Ghanaian and continental cuisine.
  2. Hostel facilities available to students.
  3. 3 video-conferencing facilities being used for educational and other purposes.

In addition, the entire GCUC campus is Wi-Fi ready thus being one of the few only
campuses in Ghana where the Internet could be accessed without the limits of wires and
cables. The beautiful campus is the most ideal for hosting social and other key
events.

These resources have positioned the University to lead the march in technology-
enhanced education in Ghana and the sub-region.

GCUC is purposefully located in Kumasi at Kenyasi.It is about 2 Kilometers off the Kumasi

Airport Roundabout on the Antoa Road.

A total of 1,200 students have enrolled to undertake several accredited programmes at Garden City University College.The present student population is however expected to increase following the next admissions expected to be take place during the impending academic semesters.

 

Spanning the past two years, GCUC has built academic partnership with a number of tertiary institutions in Ghana and other parts of the world. Among them are

  • Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)

The benefits of these relations are immense including curriculum development, faculty development and exchange, staff and student scholarships , research collaboration, access to virtual laboratories, faculty mentorship and the visitation of high profile personalities to the University.

The daily administration of the University College is managed by the Principal who is ably supported by the Registrar, Heads of Schools, various committees and other technical and support staff under the able leadership of a 12-member  University Council.

Future Academic Programs

•  B.Sc. Biology, Chemistry and Physics
-Completion of a fully equipped science faculty and laboratories for degree programs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics for the 2008/2009 academic year.

•  School of Health
- School of Health Professions offering courses in Nursing, Health Education and Pre-Physical Therapy in the 2008/2009 academic year.

• Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering to provide courses in electrical and computer engineering, information and software engineering, and systems engineering.

•  Establishment of a Graduate School by 2008/2009
